Have you already tried this tropical treat?

The Caribbean islands, Barbados included, have been blessed with a range of exotic tropical fruits, including the Chrysobalanus icaco, locally known as “fat pork”. This fruit goes by other names in the other islands, including “coco plum”, “icaco” and “hog plum”. The origin of the name is unknown, but it’s generally thought that the fruit got its name from the white spongy flesh, which looks like fat. Not to worry – despite what the name suggests, there’s nothing piggy in taste about it!

Everything on fat pork can be eaten, from the purplish-red skin, to the white flesh inside, to finally the large seed at the core. The flavour is mildly sweet. It can be enjoyed raw, but is sometimes stewed and then made into jams and jellies. Where can you find fat pork? It’s not often grown in domestic gardens, however this dense shrub can be found in gullies and fields, and vendors often sell the fruit in bags at the side of the road.

Fat pork offers many health benefits, including being rich in antioxidants, fibre and vitamin C. Plus, it is said to aid in collagen production, which results in healthy skin and complexion!

Have you tried fat pork before here in Barbados? How did you like it?
