Easter is a significant holiday here in Barbados, celebrated with a unique blend of Christian and local traditions, and is a time for families and communities to come together. For some of the most popular Bajan Easter traditions, read on!
Kite Flying:
- Across Barbados, you can spot colourful kites in the sky, being flown by individuals of all ages. Traditionally, people would make their own kites, however nowadays commercially made ones are available. You can also find handmade ones for sale at roadside stalls during this time of year. The Garrison Savannah is popular for kite-flying, with competitions held for the biggest and best kites.
Oistins Fish Festival
- Held over the 4 day Easter weekend in Oistins, Christ Church, this festival is filled with displays, activities, music, craft and food. Oistins is renowned for its fishing industry, and the festival celebrates this important part of our community. There are unique competitions such as the greasy pole competition, the egg and spoon race, and fish deboning competition. It’s fun for the whole family!
Easter Bonnet Parade
- Schools, churches and social clubs often hold these in the weeks leading up to Easter, with participants of all ages donning elaborate hand-decorated hats. These are fun for both the “models” and audience members, and are a great display of creativity and handicraft!
…Now, for the Food!
Fish
- It’s not Easter without fish in your dish! Bajans often flock to the local fish markets in the days before to guarantee their supply. Flying fish is traditionally sought after, however snapper, marlin, mahi-mahi and tuna are also popular. Steamed, fried, grilled… no matter how you cook your fish, it’s essential for Easter!
Hot Cross Buns
- Made with currents and spices, these sweet buns are marked with a white cross in icing to symbolise the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. These can be found all over, from commercial supermarkets to village bakeries. Add a slice of cheddar cheese for a treat!
For a truly Bajan Easter experience, we at Lickrish Food Tours encourage you to try your hand (and your tastebuds!) at some of these fun Easter traditions. There’s nothing else quite like it!
